There was great excitement in Heuston Station at 5.40am last Thursday as nine pupils from 6th class prepared to board a train to Cork. They were off to the VEX Robotics National competition.
The teachers were sure it would be a quiet morning trip to Cork but as pancakes, croissants, books and games were unpacked, they realised nobody intended on having a snooze!
A taxi from Kent Station Cork brought the team and their photographer, Joshua, to the venue in Munster Technological University. Huey, the robot, was unpacked and soon it was time for the competition to begin. Things looked promising as the Springdale Loaders held their own.
However, as the day went on, Huey developed a few technical problems which meant he had trouble turning corners which was essential for the Mix ‘n Match game. Thankfully this did not spoil the day out at all! With Huey packed up again, it was off on the bus to the city centre for dinner, followed by ice cream.

Finally it was time to board the train home at 6.25pm. There was just as much energy and fun on the trip home.

Congratulations to our photographer and the robotics team. Their behaviour was exemplary as they represented Springdale.
Huge thanks to the Board of Governors who funded this adventure. It was a trip that will be remembered for years to come.
